My mother died on February 1, 2016, aged 92, after very mixed care experiences. She suffered from dementia for several years. Even after I reported Benoni Nursing Home, St Just, Cornwall to CQC for understaffing which left my mother unattended, whereupon she broke her hip; hygiene issues; and refusal to answer the phone to relative inquiries, which led to the departure of the then manager, the proprietor was surprisingly allowed to continue operating, even though the CQC inspection was spectacularly failed on four out of five of the criteria. She was hard to contact whenever I tried: when not enjoying her profits on holiday in the Caribbean, her husband told me she was normally in the bath getting over the rigours of the previous night. The home put my mother's clothing in black bags and sent it for waste disposal. They told me that if my mother ran away from them, they were not responsible for bringing her back. This led to her falling down a hole in the road outside, helpfully left unlit by Cormac. She was hospitalised and we sued them successfully for negligence. When she returned she started barricading her door with furniture because she felt more secure when the staff could not gain entry. Good ancillary staff left; and were glad to share stories of their own experience under a management which regularly made mistakes with their pay but never in their favour.I was delighted to transfer her to Glencoe at Gwithian, where she blossomed again in a loving, caring atmosphere. I cannot recommend Tracey Brooking and her devoted team there highly enough. Though they did everything they could, we were unable to access NHS support funding because of the farcical government pretence that dementia was a social issue rather than an illness. The bureaucratic cost of the persistent reports designed to defend this position against my appeals probably cost the state more money than it would have paid if it had funded my mother's place appropriately. Through no fault of the Home, her overall care cost over 150K. Fortunately, she never realised this. Advice to children: tell your parents to spend their money quickly or give it to you before the state that has fleeced them all their working lives does it again before and after death !
